Money left over and savings rate: what this budget measures

What is left after spending is what remains of the month once everything is paid: income minus expenses. Divided by income, it gives your savings rate, the figure that tells you whether your wealth can grow.

With the template's made-up examples, in October: €4,950 of income and €3,440 of expenses, leaving €1,510 and a savings rate of 30.5%.

The template offers 6 income categories and 12 expense categories: housing, utilities and energy, groceries, transport, insurance, subscriptions and phone, health, children, leisure and going out, holidays, taxes, gifts and miscellaneous. A category missing from the list can be typed by hand.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The download is direct, with no sign-up, no email address and nothing in return. The file is free to use: edit it, add categories, adapt it to your household. It is not financial advice; the indicators in the summary are reading aids, not targets.

Divide what is left after spending by your income for the month. In the template, the “Summary” does it for you: income and expenses for the chosen month are added up by two SUMIFS, then what is left is divided by income. With the examples, €1,510 left from €4,950 of income gives 30.5%.

On the income side: salaries, bonuses, rent received, benefits. On the spending side: housing, utilities and energy, groceries, transport, insurance, subscriptions, health, children, leisure, holidays, taxes, gifts and miscellaneous. A dozen stable categories beat fifty you end up no longer filling in.

The file is in the standard Excel format (.xlsx), with no macros or scripts and with ordinary formulas (SUMIFS, EDATE). In Google Sheets, upload it to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets. LibreOffice and Numbers also read this format; if a drop-down list does not carry over, type the value by hand, as it appears in the list.
